in my 88 im gonna rewire EVERYTHING in the truck. need to clean out everything not needed or deleted and repalce everything that can be a problem. have too many shorts that i cant find or figuer out and since its a mudtruck that goes underwater i dont need all that much. however one thing i am conserned about is wiring the alternator. the wiring harness to the existing alternator is FUBAR. i have a new alternaotr to put in and it uses two 3-wire plugs (i think). whats the easiest way to wire this all up without dmagae or setting it on fire? i dont knoe anything bout alternators really

basicly im gonna get a boats fuse pannel and run headlight, brakes, blinkers, running lights, maby stereo, intereor lights maby, coil, PA system, and maby some other stuff im gonna do.

First: get rid of that "new" alternator. It's a 2G, aka "flamethrower".

There's not much to the wiring harness, so if the insulation & connectors are OK, you can just cut the big connector off & convert it to work with a 3G. Or you can pick up a 3G harness at the junkyard when you get the 3G alternator - they're VERY common.

.

Make sure you get a 3G with only 2 holes between each pair of front ribs, and that its mounting ears will work on your engine. That's all there is to it. If the back end doesn't have the connector facing the way you need, just rotate ("clock") it.

I Redid my alternated harness when I upgraded the alt to a 3G alt. it's very simple.

A '96 would have come from the factory with a 3G. It probably would have been the 95A version; did you swap to a 130A?

steve how about more info on your expedition harness. Can it be from any gas 4.6, 5.4, 6.8 ford truck?

The 1G is OK, but it doesn't put out sufficient current for modern vehicles' electrical demands. It was BARELY enough back then. And the remote VR is just a hassle you don't need - the little wires are easy to break, and their insulation hardens & cracks. Even if you found the 100A version of the 1G, it's not worth doing the work of changing an alternator and NOT changing to a 130A 3G. It puts all previous alternators to shame.

IDK what the full interchange is on the Ex wiring - pop the hood. If it has the 2G/3G VR connector, it'll work.

So recently did this upgrade and wasn't sure what to do with the indicator switch between original 1989 charging harness (1-wire) and the Expedition's indicator switch (2-wires). I was going to clip off the original harnesses' connector and splice onto the Expedition's but the Expedition's indicator has an extra wire. Should I combine the two Expedition indicator wires and fuse on the original indicator connector or just fuse the original indicator connector to the matching wire and leave the extra wire from the Expedition harness free (capped and wrapped of course)?
